Question 2(a)
Appropriate project
structure and its key features applicable in Dove Communications.
I would recommend Dove Communications to
use project-based organizational structure rather than the matrix structure.
Apparently, a project-based structure presents an organization with different
accompanying features that can be leveraged to enhance competiveness. In the
case of Dove Communications, first, the project manager will have the ability
to control the entire project reducing rates and chances of errors. In this
instance, therefore, the efficiency of managing a project becomes flawless
since the responsibilities to administer and monitor the activities is bestowed
on an individual who is accountable for any fault that may occur in the process
of operation. The second key feature of a project-based structure is the
presence of a team of qualified personnel which is formed specifically to
accomplish a particular task of the main project. In their respective
departments, managers are supposed to share the work among the staffs in the
project team. However, sharing of responsibility in a project-based structure
does not involve other cross-functional departments within the organization
(Daft, 2009).
Furthermore, a logical chain of command is
maintained in this structure whereby the staffs in the project team are
answerable to one project manager who is the overall moderator of the
operations within the team. In Dove Communications, employees are accountable
to two supervisors which may bring about lack of unity of command. By adopting
a project-based structure, Dove Communications will be able to save time in
decision-making, improve unity of command, and align the departmental goals to
the corporate aims of the company. Finally, in a project-based structure, the
team is independent and responsible for the piece of work till the end of the
project. This ensures that the task force is working under one project manager
and hence cannot be interfered by external parties (Daft, 2009).
The project-based structure is relevant to
Dove Communications because it promotes quick decision making which is
paramount when implementing a project. This form of project management saves
time in decision making because there are few parties involved in consultation.
Moreover, in the project-based structure, each staff has clear responsibility
and focus on working toward a common goal.
