In order to demonstrate mastery of these concepts, you will research and prepare a final paper on the topics of the four functions of management (planning, leading, organizing, and controlling) building a corporate culture and incorporating diversity in the organization. The foundation of this paper is acquired through research of a business leader, such as a CEO of a major corporation, or a sports coach at a national/collegiate level, etc. For purposes of this paper you are not to select any political figures. Because you will need a minimum of three sources for this paper, the individual selected must be researchable, not simply someone you know and admire. • General guidelines for completing the paper: • ▪The written report (worth 150 points) needs to be written in APA format. This format is the standard writing format for academic business papers. It should consist of the following elements: 1.A cover page (does not count toward your minimum requirement.) 2.The body of the paper. Your paper should be between 4 and 6 pages. If you have less than 4 pages you will lose points. You can have more than 6 pages. 3.The reference page (does not count toward your minimum requirement.) The paper should be divided into four separate sections. The first section is an overview of the company, industry, organization, etc. where this person demonstrated his/her management/leadership. It is the history of the company. Include things like when the company came into existence, what part if any did the leader have in its existence, etc. (NOTE: The focus here is the company/industry/organization not the person). This overview usually winds up being around 1 page. You should also utilize one outside source such as an annual report, articles from appropriate publications, etc. In the second section, you are shifting from the company to the leader. This section should describe how this leader uses each one of the four functions of management. Start out each part with a description of the function you are going to be discussing. For example, Planning, According to Daft & Marcic (2015), the planning function is where the manager “selects goals and ways to attain them.” Musk demonstrates this by .... . You can include the company mission statement and how the leader sets both long term and short-term goals to meet the mission or vision of the company. Be sure you support your statements with citations from your sources. Then go on to organizing. For example, according to our textbook organizing is etc. Then describe how your leader organizes his company. In this section, be sure to include concepts from Chapter 7 of your book. One way to get information for this section is to google organizational structure for whatever company you are writing about. You can also talk about how resources are used and allocated. Be sure you support your statements with citations from your sources. When you are finished discussing organizing move on to the leading function. Start out with the definition of leadership and then describe the leadership style. Include concepts from Chapter 11 of your book. What concepts do you see this leader using? What type of leadership style does this person possess? These are just a couple of questions you should answer in this section. Be sure you support your statements with citations from your sources. Finally controlling. Controlling is not watching over people or telling them what to do that is micromanaging. Controlling is determining how you are doing with regard to the objectives you have set. Use Chapter 15 to write the definition and to include concepts in this section. If you google balanced scorecard for your company name more than likely you will see what they use as performance measurements. If you can’t find a balanced scorecard then make one up based on your understanding of the company. Be sure you support your statements with citations from your sources. In the third section, you should discuss the culture of the organization and how your leader has influenced the culture. Be sure to tie back cultures from chapter 2 to your discussion here. Specifically, what culture do you think this company has and how does the leader support it or perpetuate it. . Be sure you support your statements with citations from your sources. In the fourth section, discuss how this leader brings diversity into the organization. If you do not see any indication of diversity or you think more could be done, please discuss how you would either create a culture of diversity in this organization or expand what is already in place. Be sure to include your own observations here. Bring in concepts from Chapter 9 into your discussion here. You can separate the sections by using headings within the paper. For example. Section 1 Company Overview Section 2 The Four Management Functions Planning Organizing Leading Controlling Section 3 Culture Section 4 Diversity The reference page is a separate page.
