Talent management practices are key
in any business. Effective practices can increase employee performance while
simultaneously improving job satisfaction and engagement - increasing job
satisfaction and competitiveness within an organization. This series will
highlight seven talent management practices: recruiting and hiring employees,
motivating them, providing training and development programs, retaining top
talent, evaluating employee performance, and compensating employees. Effective
talent management practices help organizations identify and hire top talent,
offer career growth and development opportunities, and recognize employees for
their achievements in today's rapidly-evolving business environment. Talent
management is essential in reaching strategic goals while remaining competitive
within this rapidly changing environment.
Recruitment is an essential element
of talent management practices within any organization. According to Caldwell
et al. (2018), recruiting identifies and attracts potential candidates for open
positions within an organization. A well-planned recruitment process includes
defining job requirements and posting openings before screening resumes,
conducting interviews, and assessing candidates. Organizations may also use
social media platforms, employee referrals, or job fairs (Agarwala, 2003).
Organizations seeking successful
recruitment must remain aware of current labor market trends and best
practices. Candidates often seek companies offering work-life balance, career
development opportunities, and an inclusive culture. Therefore, organizations
that prioritize these aspects may attract more talented applicants. Fair and
objective hiring practices must also be used to provide equal employment
opportunities - this includes avoiding discriminatory hiring practices while
creating a diverse and inclusive workplace (Barber & Roehling, 1993).
Effective recruitment strategies
can also contribute to employer branding by promoting reputation in the minds
of employees, prospective candidates, and the general public; by emphasizing
positive aspects and achievements within an organization and showcasing them
effectively, they can attract top talent while creating a favorable image (Agarwala,
2003).
Hiring Employees
Hiring employees is an integral
component of talent management practices that involves selecting the most
qualified individuals for a position. Fernández‐Rodríguez et al. (2017) define
hiring as selecting individuals from an applicant pool for employment positions.
Organizations typically follow an established process when recruiting
employees; this may involve job analysis, job descriptions, postings, resume
screening, pre-employment testing interviews, or background checks.
Effective hiring practices are
fundamental to an organization's long-term success. Hiring the wrong candidate
can have severe repercussions for an organization, including decreased
productivity and morale and potential legal complications (Salamon, Kim, &
Gelfand, 2016). Therefore, an organization must prioritize fair and objective
hiring processes and avoid discriminatory hiring practices that violate laws
such as age, gender, race, etc. Organizations should recognize the significance
of onboarding as part of the hiring process. Onboarding refers to integrating
new employees into an organization by familiarizing them with its culture,
policies, and procedures. A successful onboarding program can help newcomers
feel welcome while learning their roles and responsibilities quickly, leading
them to be productive members faster. Furthermore, effective onboarding may
contribute to employee retention - employees who feel supported in their new
roles are likelier to remain with an employer.
