Define what recidivism
is. Use the article ATTACHED to identify the state which
had the highest recidivism rate between 2004-2007.
Use the same article above to compare and contrast the approaches that Oregon,
Michigan and Missouri used to help cut their recidivism and correction
costs. Be sure to provide specific policies that were implemented in each
of these states and the end result of these policies.
After reading the article and watching the video on Norway's prison system,
what are two policies that you would implement on the national level to reduce
the rate of recidivism in this country? Be sure to fully explain why you
choose these policies and how each would work.

Recidivism
Recidivism
is the act of an individual repeating an undesirable behavior after having
undergone adverse consequences of that particular behavior or have been
rehabilitated to refrain from that behavior. It also amounts to the number of
persons who a rearrested for a similar felony (Rudin
et al., 2018). Minnesota has the highest recidivism rate between 2004
and 2007, with the number of individuals rearrested for a similar case for the
period standing at 61.2%.
Oregon
experienced reduced recidivism cases and its related cost in 2004-2007,
achieved through detailed transition programs. The country's judicial system
employed correctional transformation programs to inspire incarcerated
individuals to refrain from previous criminal lives. Incarcerated individuals
are enrolled in transformational programs six months before they are released
from prison. Different departments, including the judicially and government
officials, were committed to encouraging them to live positive life. (The Revolving Door of America's Prison, n.d).
Michigan found the problem of recidivism through correctional facilities in
which parolees are equipped with tools and skills they can use to earn their
living instead of engaging in crimes. The
transition plan addressed housing and unemployment issues and offered the
former culprits counseling services to reform. Missouri instituted the policy
of minimum sentencing in a judicial system to decongest the prisons in the
country. Besides, the judicial system used evidence supervision to address the
recidivism problem. Evidence supervision
tries other corrective measures before resorting to sending parolees back into
prison.
I
good be glad to see transitional policy and evidence supervision implemented in
the United States of America. Apart from transitional programs counseling
offenders and enlightening them on the adverse effects of criminals, it also
equips the individual with skills they can use to work and earn their living.
Skills enable them to get employment or employ themselves. Evidence supervision
is better than sending the parolee back into the prison because containing
individuals in prison increases the cost of running the prison, making the
prisoners stubborn rather than transformed.
