Behavior-Specific Praise
This strategy is focused on providing specific remarks concerning a particular positive behavior from students. Through this approach, teachers observe what students are doing and notice something they have done positively. They then provide comments specifying what the student has done and let them know it was good to do that. For example, if a student (call her Alice) has always had a problem of standing up and disrupting others as they learn, and on a particular lesson they were very cooperative and did not create disruption, the teacher can offer Behavior-Specific Praise by stating that “Alice, today you were very cooperative in class and that is very commendable of you. Keep up.”
Criterion-Specific Rewards
Teachers use this positive consequence to encourage students to maintain a target behavior. For example, if a teacher targets "appropriate lining up of students during recess snack" from a particular student, the student lines up very well, and the teacher provides criterion-specific rewards because the student has complied with the target behavior. The purpose of this strategy is to remind a student of a particular behavior they should practice (Weinstein & Romano, 2015).
