James Baldwin’s “If Beale Street
Could Talk:” Love, Family, and Culture
“The
love and the laughter come from the same place: but not many people go there”
(Baldwin 10). The novel, If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin is
about a young African-American couple, Tish and Fonny, who are in love and want
to get married, but Fonny is accused of a crime he did not commit, and the
family is trying to get him out. The book explores themes of racism, injustice,
love, and family. It was set in Harlem in 1970. The love story of Tish and
Fonny demonstrates African American life and history during the Harlem
Renaissance.
