Queer and Youth Culture

As society becomes more accepting of LGBTQ+ identities and experiences, queer fashion has emerged as an effective form of self-expression among young people who identify as queer or are allied with the queer community. This essay explores where queer fashion and youth culture overlap and how this intersection impacts fashion.

Queer fashion can serve as an important means of resistance against heteronormativity and gender binaries, subverting expectations that there are only two genders with specific clothing and style options for each gender (Slack, 2021). Furthermore, according to Rahbari (2020), queer fashion gives a voice by enabling individuals to express themselves freely within the confines of their gender identity or sexual orientation. This also eliminates elements of ‘judgment’ or discrimination that these groups may experience from society; hence it plays a significant role in queer liberation movements, which aim to dismantle oppressive systems for a fairer society.

Besides, Queer fashion has also been heavily impacted by punk and DIY (do-it-yourself) movements. Queer...
