People are faced with decisions to make daily, some of
which are hard to decide because none of the available options results in gains
without gain. When individuals face dilemmas, they strain a lot because they
have to be as ethical as possible. Finally, they have to cause harm to some
parties involved in the crimes (Ahmad,
2020). In the trolley problem, either you turn the lever to kill one
person, allowing the train or the rail to kill the five people on the railway.
The situation is a dilemma because turning the lever to kill one person off the
first track will cause the loss of innocent life because the person is already
on the safe side. However, killing the five people on the railway to save one
person would benefit fewer people than those losing from your decision. Hence regarding
the consequentialism and utilitarianism theories, I would turn the lever to
kill the one person on-off the rail line and save five.
Utilitarianism theory maintains that the consequences
of action matter more than the action itself. According to Smart (2020), the action’s
results will determine whether an individual has made an ethical decision or
not. Therefore utilitarianism theory encourages people to address ethical
dilemmas by taking options that confer more benefits to the most significant
number of affected parties while adversely affecting the possible least number
at the same time. When it comes to ethical dilemmas, none of the available
choices will result in benefits without causing a loss. However, the prime goal
is to maintain the loss as low as possible.
