Literature

Literature describes written as well as spoken material, including songs, speeches, and plays. On the other hand, African-American literature (AAL) refers to the literary works produced in the United States, especially during the era of constitutionally backed prejudice against black people (Warren, 2014). Similarities between literature and AAL include the use of the same stylistic features such as personification; however, they differ in subject matter; for example, AAL only describes historical problems.

The list of what counts as literature can be endless; however, it is possible to narrow down the extensive amount of works into the following media, drama, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Ross (2013) explained that anything in writing that is in the art form and of intellectual or artistic relevance to society counts as literary works. Various pieces that constitute literature results in different actions, eliciting varied feelings from target audiences.

Stories are essential in social settings since they acknowledge patterns, and in those outlines, people discover meaning. Persons use stories to understand the world, sharing their perceptions with others (Ross, 2013); therefore, storytelling is an essential component in human existence (Jenkins, 2017). Stories represent a powerful instrument that allows leaders to inspire, teach, and influence masses; hence it creates connections among individuals, and between people and ideologies.
