Race and Ethnicity
Introduction
Race denotes the categorization of people based on
skin color and other physical features. Ethnicity refers to the shared mutual
history, practice, customs, music, and so on. An ethnic group develops from collective
historical and social experiences. The United States is a multi-ethnic and
multi-racial nation; with people from different parts of the world continually
migrating into the country. Race and ethnicity are complex and multifaceted
aspects that influence an individual’s identity and life in various ways; these
social vices manifest in daily lives and hinder the process of identity
formation for different members of society.
Effects
of Race and Ethnicity on Individuals
Racial and ethical abuse harms the targeted victims
because these actions often hurt people, communities, and society in general. According
to Crossman, various studies conclude that race and ethnic characteristics
expose the minority to multiple instances of hatred or prejudice. For example,
in the documentary True Colors, two
salesmen welcome and serve John a white male and ignore Glen, a black male. Besides,
while in a record store Glen is not served but tailed by a white salesman
(Lilmikesf). People who suffer from these discriminatory behavior experience feelings
of sadness.
Different individuals from society suffer from racism
and ethnicity because it violates their free will and self-respect. Targets of racial
and ethnic abuse often feel like second-class citizens. For instance, in the
documentary by Diane Sawyer, when John visits an apartment building the manager
says it is available. However, when Glen visits the same establishment, he is
not allowed to tour the same vacant apartment because the manager claims it has
already been paid for on the previous day (Lilmiksef). As a result, the failure
of the manager to show both John and Glen equal respect underlines the effects
of racial and ethnic profiling.
