Review- Global Warming

Abstract
Global
warming is described as the observed rise in average global temperatures
measured on a century-scale (Pappas, 2017). The analysis and examination of
global warming are done by the documentation of pertinent questions. Such as;
“What is global warming? How can global warming be mitigated? How can global
awareness on global warming be created?” This literature review goes ahead to
discuss the definition, facts, and issues concerning the effects and causes of
heat-trapping pollution. The first part expounds the background information
regarding global warming. The second section of the paper deals with the
definition, causes and the link of global warming to the extreme weather. The
third part involves the discussion on the available institutional measures
against global warming. Besides, the section also discusses how environmental
agencies have tried to contain global warming. The fourth part explains the
role played by the media in the spreading of public awareness concerning the
effects and causes of global warming. Further, under the section, the failure
of the media in the process of spreading awareness regarding heat-trapping
pollution is also discussed. Finally, the last section of the paper provides
recommendations on areas that should be the main focus of future studies.

Introduction
Over
the past decade, the world in its recorded history has witnessed the fastest
and constant increase in the normal global temperature. In reality, the globe
is heating up. Today, the global surrounding is warmer now than it was in 1880
when record-keeping began, and the global temperatures are on a constant rise.
MacMillan (2016) warns that according to experts this trend will only
accelerate in the coming years considering it is just after 2000 that NASA in
its 134-year record, recorded one of the 16 hottest years. According to
National Resource Defense Council online web page, climate change deniers have
argued that the rise in global temperatures has taken a “slowdown”; conversely,
recent studies, most especially a 2015 publication in the journal Science, have
disputed these claims (MacMillan, 2016). Scientists have indicated that not
unless the “federal government initiate initiatives that will ensure the
reduction of global-warming emissions, over the next century the average
temperatures in the U.S risk increasing by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.”
(Pappas, 2017). The purpose of this literature review is to get a better
understanding of the issues and facts of global warming and learn more about
the measures in place to mitigate this global threat.
1.0 What is global warming?
Science writer
Stephanie Pappas, a Live Science Contributor, define global warming as the observed
rise in average global temperatures measured on a century-scale (Pappas, 2017).
Global warming is caused by the emission of greenhouses gases, carbon dioxide
(CO2) as well as other air pollutants that are collected in the atmosphere
leading to the absorption of solar radiation and sunlight. In most instances,
the received radiation escapes into space; nevertheless, the other pollutants
last for an extended period in the natural atmosphere where heat is trapped
thus leading to global warming. In a nutshell, this is termed as the greenhouse
effect. To mitigate climate change then it is significant that there are deep
cuts in emissions by using alternatives to fossil fuels. In the United States,
the most significant source of heat-trapping pollution results from the burning
of fossil fuels so that to generate electricity; this exercise produces over 2
billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. As a result, the most prominent
polluters of the atmosphere are the numerous coal-burning power plants. Besides,
the transport sector stands as the second-largest producers of heat-trapping
pollution, most especially carbon, which is documented to generate over 1.6
billion tons of carbon annually.
