Causes of Depression

Introduction

There are many mental disorders that have almost similar characteristics. There is a tendency of people to say that the feeling of being depressed is something that is normal following a loss, struggles of day-to-day life, or having low self-esteem. However, when feelings become too strong, they affect the daily operation of a person. Some of the problems that are a result of depression are very severe, and this makes it important to understand the cause of this mental disorder. Depression may be the root cause of many other chronic diseases, and thus it is important to understand what depression is and what can cause depression in order to try and avoid them. Prevention is better than cure; this means that knowing the causes of depression would be a step in the right direction toward having a free depression society. Depression is caused by family history, illness and health issues, medication, drugs and alcohol, and personality, among other minor causes

Firstly, depression is linked to family history. There is the tendency of a person to develop depression if some of their family members have had issues of depression before. It is not yet proven whether this cause of depression is a result of biology or learned behavior from close relatives. However, it is found that a family with a history of depression will tend to manifest in a future generation of the same family. “The morbidity risk for relatives of individuals who had a single lifetime episode of depression was significantly lower (5.4%) than it was for relatives of individuals who experienced recurrences (12.65%)” (Monroe et al., 2014). Personal history of depression is linked positively to the family history of depression.

Secondly, depression may be triggered by illnesses and health issues. Injuries or any other physical illnesses can significantly impact one’s mental health. Mostly, chronic health problems, long-term health complications, or any other physical condition that changes one’s life drastically can trigger depression (Park & Zarate Jr, 2019). When a doctor notices this problem, would you have to do...
