TX Politics and The Media: COVID-19 in The News

Guidelines:

Compare and contrast the cable news broadcasts of Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC covering the topic of the COVID-19 Viral Pandemic during the same news cycle. If you watch episodes on the same day, they are far more likely to be discussing the same new events.

You may pick episodes from these shows dating back one calendar year for this activity. Each program can be accessed on the parent network's website or an online video archive (YouTube, Hulu, Google video, etc.). Watch each program for a minimum of 15 minutes to ensure the topic was fully addressed from introduction to the conclusion (I watch the news like a hawk, so it will be obvious if anyone didn't get the whole story).

Be sure to follow each of the formatting guidelines provided in Addendum III of the syllabus and the specific guidelines for a discussion activity (minimum research and writing requirements) provided both online and in the syllabus.

Note: Any work that does not meet the minimum writing and research requirements will be marked incomplete, along with any late posts, off-topic content, or superficial answers.

Discussion Prompts (answer all of them):

• What was the context for the lead story on each show? What level of priority did "political news" receive in general?

What were the similarities in the general nature of the way the topic was covered? What were the major differences?

• What did you see/hear that was relevant to the chapter readings from this Unit?

• Did you detect a bias? What was the nature of the bias (iberal v. conservative)?

Was the bias more obvious on one network than the other? What is the rationale for using bias as a media company? Cite a peer-rev.ewed academic journal article for information related to a formal policy recommendation.

• What is your overall assessment of the media's coverage of political news after completing the readings for this unit, working on this activity, and examining the posts of your peers on this topic?

How will the information from this assignment be useful to you in the near or long-term future? Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, media and precisely televisions stations have played significantly in the dissemination of information. There has been a lot of misinformation and disinformation on coronavirus pandemic statistics and other misconceptions on its treatment and its mode of transmission. Different cable networks have different approaches to their news delivery. There are three mainstream news networks, and they are CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News, all with different approaches to their broadcasting (Muddiman et al.). These different mainstreams vary in their use of language and factual claims.

There is a growing tendency of Fox News to mention Democrats while MSNBC is likely to mention the Republicans (Scopelliti et al., 1879). This shows that the media houses have some traits of playing politics in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. This is also a depiction that there are people with organizational preferences in the presentations and interviews. There is also a similarity between Fox News and MSNBC dedicating more of their time to partisan politics than to health personnel and organizations. In the video, “Dire U.S. COVID-19 Death Rate Seen in Graph Excluding NY, NJ, CT, Rachel Maddow appears to be more focused on her briefing on the response of President Trump, who says that the fatalities nationwide have fallen by 75 percent in mid-April and says that the number is significantly improving. This claims that CNN, unlike the other mainstream television stations have a lot of reference on medics and other health organizations. In the case of a video, "This Country's Covid-19 Death Rate is World's Highest,” the briefing entirely engages medical doctors while tackling the case of the rising cases of Covid-19 globally, but with special interest on Portugal’s situation in Lisbon and Porto.

There is another disparity between CNN and Fox News. Fox News is inclined towards business and economy and how they are impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic, but CNN is more inclined on prevention of the transmission or the spread of the virus.
