Social issues paper in Week 3 addressed homelessness in the
United States. Destitution can be defined as a lack of a roof over one's head
or living in substandard houses (United States Interagency
Council on Homelessness, 2019). A significant number of people (over half a
million) in the United States do not have shelter, and the situation keeps getting
worse based on deteriorating economic conditions and the skyrocketing cost of
renting or owning a house. Homelessness in America not only affects destitute'
health adversely but also depicts a negative image on the nation's ability to
provide social support for its citizens.
The
first factor that can explain increased homelessness in American is income
stagnation versus the increasing cost of housing. According to Batterham (2019), income tends to stagnate from
entry-level, hence making it hard for low-in earners to afford houses for rent
or through mortgage arrangements. When employers fail to provide progressive
earning, a significant number of employees approach their retirement phase
without a home, which makes it more complicated when they stop working because
they can no longer afford monthly rent remittances. The problem of low earning
