Slavery in the Caribbean began in
the 16th century after sugar cane cultivation was transplanted to
the Americans in this century. The native groups in America provided the first
enslaved people. Still, both English and French farmers tried to enlist
indentured workers for the following reasons native enslaved Americans were
weak. They could not meet the high demand, and also it turns out that none of
these labor sources would be enough to fill the tall order of workers on the
American sugar plantations. As a result, farmers started to import enslaved
