Journal Entry - Social Workers and the LGBTQ Population and Advocacy, Internationally

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is an essential body in the advocacy of human rights in different sectors. One of the prevailing concentrations is to ensure minority groups have a say in the boarder society on various aspects ranging from gender diversity to how people identify with different sexual orientations. Additionally, the NASW insists on federal policies that different agencies can use to champion the rights of children and those who are disadvantaged in communities. However, the NASW cannot achieve this aspiration would and effective collaboration from social workers.

First, in relation to ensuring equal rights and access to LGBTQ populations, social workers have to sensitize the general public about rights at their disposal. Information provided by UHNCR (2015) indicates that to protect people, they must first be informed about their rights and limitation. This way, the general public can quickly notice when others and the state have violated their rights. In this role, social workers should ensure people, mainly those in minority groups such as LGBTQ, as informed about the law and policies regarding possible legalization of such unions.

I think the United Nations' address on Global LGBT Rights comes very time in solving the increasing level of discrimination that these minority groups are facing. The address by the United Nations shows solidarity in instilling freedom for people who identify themselves differently by assuring national and international support. Championing for these rights also acts as a precursor to promoting inclusivity in the workplace, in learning institutions, and more so, in the communities in which these people live.
