The primary concept in the article, “Diversity dispatch: Increasing diversity awareness with cultural competency” by Helton (2010) is the focus on how professionals can embrace diversity training and the ideas of cultural competence. Professionals, most especially, librarians who serve a diverse community of users have an increased opportunity to study other cultural differences and attain a deeper understanding of diversity (Helton, 2010). Librarians act as custodians of culture considering they empower the communities through information sharing; however, it is difficult to understand the sensitivity of outreach efforts and programs. The issues surrounding cultural competence regarding the increase of diversity awareness helps information professionals to do their jobs much better when serving individuals from ethnic, cultural minority communities. Information professionals that are culturally competent provide the best services to individuals they are serving without paying attention to whether they are African, transgendered, and so on due to increased diversity awareness.
