Southern Strategy
The
southern strategy by Nixon was a strategy of the Republican Party towards
elections to try and increase the support among the white votes in the south by
appealing to racism against African Americans. The strategy involved the
republican leaders appealing to many of the grievances of the white southerners
to gain their support. The strategy meant that the Republicans had a challenge
in winning the black American votes in the future. The Republicans chose to
ignore the black votes and concentrate on the white votes. Like Nixon and the
republican party, Donald Trump used the same racial lines in his campaigns.
Trump exploited the white fears and prejudice by igniting the fire with claims
that when Joe Biden is elected as the president, the suburbs will be filled
with low-income houses. Trump managed to get support from the people who had
earlier clashes with the Black Lives Matter protesters across the United
States. The strategy of Trump is not a direct replica of Nixon. He blended the
angle of Nixon with other pitches to voters. “convinced people that if they didn’t come vote for him their
way of life was going to disappear” (Strauss, 2020). "The Nixon campaign
in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar
left and black people," John Ehrlichman. Ehrlichman said that the war on
drugs by President Nixon had two sides; enemies, antiwar, and the back people.
