problem of sustainability.” (O’Brien, R., Williams, M. (2010). Global
political economy, 3rd Ed., p.344, London, UK; Palgrave Macmillan.)

On Thursday, September 16, 2021, The House Oversite
Committee expanded its investigation into the fossil fuels industry’s
involvement in spreading disinformation about the role of fossil fuels in
influencing climate change. The committee chairpersons and subcommittee in the
environment chairperson summoned the top managers at BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, and
lobbying American Petroleum Institute and U.S. Chamber of Commerce to appear
before Congress in October testify the information the spread about the impacts
of Fossil fuel. According to Newburger ( 2021),
the prime companies in the country have been spreading false information to the
public about the adverse effects of production and fossil oil and gas on human
and climate changes. Oil and gas companies have faced several lawsuits from
states and cities across the U.S over the campaign they put across that resulted
in undermining climate policy and downplaying the effects of burning fossil
fuel on global warming.
The committee requires the top five oil and gas
companies to present the report explaining the role of oil and gas in long-term
branding and lobbying campaigns to spread climate disinformation and undermine
climate policy. In the letter to the five biggest companies, the committee
stated that they mind more on their gain from the business because they spent $
billion to spread misleading climate-related branding and lobbying between 2015
and 2018. “The company have reaped huge profits for decades while contributing
to climate change that is devastating American communities, costing taxpayers
billions of dollars and ravaging the natural world” (Newburger, 2021)
The committee also requested the executive to produce
documents related to disinformation by the end of the month and confirm their
appearance at the hearing by September 23, 2021. Spokespersons of the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce, API, and BP confirmed their attendance at their hearing
and accepted they admitted they are aware that the climate is changing (Newburger, 2021). However, they claimed that
community’ activities are the primary reason for climate change being
experienced in the country. The top executives promised to work with the
committee to curb climate change and its adverse impacts on humans and the environment.
