control is one of the most debated topics across the globe. Gun control is laws
and regulations that restrict civilians from owning or possessing firearms (Alpers
& Wilson, n.d). Gun control dates back to 1791, when the Second Amendment
was ratified. Gun control mechanisms during the colonial period included
criminalizing the transfer of guns to slaves and indentured servants; and
banning loaded guns in Boston houses. Nowhere in the world is gun control more
controversial than in the US since gun possession is constitutionally
protected, but where murders committed with guns are extremely common. The
opposers of gun control argue that they have a constitutional right to own and
bear firearms for security purposes. They allege that gun does not kill; people
kill. This paper proposes gun control because it would reduce gun deaths, stealing
of legally owned firearms to commit crime, and gun control would reduce
instances of suicides.
It
is paramount for the local, state, and national governments to implement
stringent legislation and regulation to control ownership and possession of
firearms because it would reduce gun-related deaths. Study shows that gun is
among the leading source of death in the United States of America. A report
published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demonstrated
that gun-related injuries occasioned over 45,000 deaths in the United States of
America in 2020 only. Gramlich (2022)
maintained that the United States witnessed 24,576 murders in 2020, and 79%
(19,384) involved gunshots. Therefore, controlling guns In the US can
significantly reduce the number of murders in the country.
Also, controlling ownership and possession of firearms minimizes crimes perpetuated using stolen firearms from legal owners. Research shows that some criminals killing people in the United States does not own guns but teal them from individual who own them legally, like military personnel.
