Assignment Details:
You have been promoted to the Manager of
Global Expansion. The executive team in your company has made a decision to
expand into two countries, which has become your first priority. Your first
obstacle came when the governments of these two countries delayed approval of
the expansion plans. You held a meeting with your employees to brainstorm on
how to overcome the delay. One of your employees who has done business in these
countries before suggests that if you offer a bribe to the government official,
any future deals will go much smoother. Without a bribe, you might lose the
deal altogether. This is a normal practice in these countries and is not
considered to be illegal. After the meeting, consider whether or not your
company should agree to pay a bribe and why or why not?

Bribing
is the act of giving material things to a government official with the aim of
manipulating hid power to make critical and grant you due benefit (Freeman et al.). Different
Countries have different policies governing social problems such as giving and
taking bribes, corruption, and money laundering. Some countries sternly
discourage such acts, while others are not concerned about discouraging or
perpetuating such vices. According to the code of ethics and common sense, it
is against the moral rules to gain undue advantage through evil acts.
Concerning the case of the delay by the government, I would not give the bribe.
The unfair gain mainly results in a more significant loss and adversely impacts
the company's performance, and subject the company's management to guilty life.
First,
I would not encourage giving the bribe to speed up the process because the
bribing acts as my result of a bigger loss in the future. The government
officer asking for the bribe may give us counterfeit documents, which would
lead us to more trouble if permission is granted. Indeed, the country has not
declared bribing illegal, but in the future, the country leadership might
decide to investigate our credibility in the country when our business has
already thrived. Upon realizing we entered the through bribing puts us at a
risk of losing our enterprise when it is already established, which is more
painful than present delayed authentication. Besides, we may be prosecuted for
contravening the law.
Second,
I would refrain from bribing government officials because the act is likely to
adversely impact our business's performance. Bribing has worked to the
advantages of others before, but it is not guaranteed that it will lead to
fruition in our case. The deal has a chance of backfiring and land in prison
and losing the business. The officer might be cunning and decide to lure us
money and set us. Besides, as a leader in the company, all employees are
watching me make the right decision that would result in the highest benefit to
business and others (
