ASSIGNMENT
#4 Rough draft for the Final Essay on a Keyword (1.5 pages single-spaced,
one-inch margins, 12 font) on a focused exploration of the readings around a
specific theme or central keyword that help explain our class title “Global
Futures.” The keyword can be more than just one word like “future generation”
or “ancestral memory.” If someone asked you what the class “Global Futures” is
about, you cannot talk about EVERYTHING. So pick a specific theme to help
explain our class to them. Whether its Democracy, Rising China, Climate Change,
Indigeneity, Feminism etc. Combine some of the older stuff you wrote for this
class (do not just cut and paste, but think deeply of how to integrate course
material). You can take from parts of your personal letter, future of work
essay, media image assignment, etc.
One
small keyword can open up a window to the entire class. Show me how this is
done! Your keyword can even be Zombie, Mutation, Evolution, or Alien. Your goal
is to connect and link things that we have already covered in class:
1)
Explain the keyword you picked, summarize different authors’ arguments by
effective use of paraphrasing, and demonstrate your own understanding of the
keyword
2) Show
how have the authors’ arguments shaped, changed, or challenged your views about
the future? Please draw upon at least four assigned texts. Make specific
connections to your observations (for e.g., does the author’s point
substantiate or illustrate yours? Due before end of Sunday March 7 on Canvas.

You
will select a key phrase of the word based on the given readings: Future.
Based on the reading material given, the work
selected for the discussion is Future various authors have used the
word “future” differently to convey their intended message, as discussed below.
According to Schields (2019), in the article culture and decolonization in the Butch
Caribbean 1948-1975, Future entails panning for you what to attain some
days to come and working for it. The article narrates that Dutch Caribbean
sought to unite Netherland, Antilles, Suriname. After careful deliberation, the
Caribbean found that the only road to the aspired future is to eliminate colonial
power from their territory. Every member country was willing to contribute to
their plan for freedom in the future by making an outline of how they would
participate in implementing the plan to have a bright future. For instance,
Sticusa promised to reform the substances that constituted to the barrier
between them and Netherlands, hence facilitating cooperation culture. However,
in the first attempt, the plan for harmonious cultural cooperation failed due
transfer of power in Indonesia in 1949. Sticusa did not encourage two way
traffic culture between the Dutch and Caribbean and thus contributed to the
entire plan's failure for collaborative culture among the member countries.
Ultimately, Sticusa was kicked out of the race for cooperation culture dream.
From the article, I have learned that the
future is a projection of where one wants to realize. A projected future call
for cooperation and contribution from all the members. The road to the future
is full of obstacles, and it is crucial to identify sources of failure as you
pursue the future.
