Why is teaching evolution still controversial?

Teaching evolutionary science in American public schools is still a controversial issue. Political scientists Micheal Berkman and Eric Plutzer argue that in the majority of high school biology teachers do not advocate strongly for evolutionary biology to be taught in class. In 2011, a science article concluded that proponents of evolution and scientific methods are losing the fight to have the subject being taught in American classrooms. 

In 1859, the concept of natural selection was introduced by Charles Darwin thus igniting a continuing battle between science and religious doctrines. Today, in American classrooms according to political scientist Micheal Berkman only 13% of teachers openly support the reality of creation, 28% teach on the occurrence of natural selection, and 60% try to avoid the controversy that results from providing any evidence that supports evolution.
