Men are privileged over women, heterosexuals are privileged over gay and lesbian individuals, and able-bodied individuals are advantaged over individuals with disabilities. In fact, a white, able-bodied, heterosexual male is referred to as a hegemonic person, a person who has authoritative status. What kind of social privilege do you have? This may include wealth, and youth, as well as the main social categories of race, sex, sexual orientation and able-body because we also discriminate against old people and poor people. How far up on the social hierarchy are you if you figure in all of the six categories? Do you think that the higher up you are on the social ladder the more social responsibility you should have toward the general good of all people? How can you use your social privilege for social good?
