What is Education

INSTRUCTIONS:

What is education? Who can be considered an educated person? Is the college or any other form of institutionalized learning a necessity in acquiring education? Why or why not? In what other ways do people learn? Are there any advantages to being an educated person? Contrarily, are there any disadvantages to a lack of education in one’s life? Talk about your own experiences and goals you want to achieve in terms of education.  Tell me about one particular experience from school you consider important or formative. Has it left a long-lasting mark on you? Look at other people’s experiences and ideas as presented in the text we have read this semester;incorporate those readings into your essay. How does the reading connect to education? How and why is it important? How do these authors see the role of institutions in a person’s learning process?  By the second draft of this essay, we will have read: “What is the Purpose of Education” by Deborah Meier, “Read This! Instilling a Love of Reading in Kids” by Chris Mercogliano, and “Saved” by Malcolm X. Use these articles as you discuss the topic.  These are the steps I would like you to follow: 1.     Summarize the information these articles provide (you do not have to use all of them, but use at least one) 2.     Connect the findings to your ideas. Can you agree with the authors? Which ideas make sense to you? 3.     Make sure that there is sufficient evidence for your points.
