Question 1. What are the three components of source credibility?
According to Richmond et al., (2012), source credibility is the level of believing that a source of information is attached to for being genuine and reliable. In most case when a person is perceived to be highly trustworthy, his or her words will be taken without further thoughts to criticize the information. On the hand, if a person has a high tendency or perceived to offer false information most of the time, everyone will question virtually every information emanating from the subject and seek various source to verify and certify such sources. Various components of source credibility exist and have been confirmed by the contemporary science in the society.
First, competence is a core value that is attached to a person that seems to have a vast knowledge on a given subject, and his or her expertise is well established beyond any reasonable doubts. The gauge of weighing competence in once capability is only based on whether on is entirely competent or completely incompetent. On an absolute basis, people will seek to know whether a person is competent or not while in the comparative approach the urge will be finding out whether this person is competent based on a certain parameter of comparison mostly person. Mostly, credibility will be built on the comparative approach where subjects perceive a source as credible based on how competent the source is in regarding how the competence measure with their own. If we feel the person has no knowledge about the issue, there will be a tendency to care less about the other dimensions of source credibility.
Secondly, trustworthiness is the other dimension that can be used to measure the credibility of a source. The level of honesty attached on an individual and the related character issue which will make us feel comfortable in believing that a person is telling the truth. To make a perception of the trustworthiness exist, there should be a strong continuum of evidence of the credibility of the source to have acted reliably in the past incidences. Besides, the trustworthiness issue can only be rated as being totally untrustworthy or being totally trustworthy with has no room for the middle of the road perception. Despite our total untrustworthiness, we may find ourselves believing, to a certain extent, the other sources that are perceived as less credible
