Low, "Can Selfishness Save the Environment?" in The Atlantic, September 1993 (on file) WATCH the film, "Flow: For Love of Water," at the following link. The film has some subtitles and additional information. So, please watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkdIIfArWqo&feature=emb_logo In a 1000-1100 words response, answer the following questions According to the reading by Ridley and Low, people behaving selfishly (motivated by self-interest) can result in environmental degradation. Explain how and why. Can the same argument be applied to organizations that have a bottom line? (7 points) Define privatization. Do you think environmental goods and services such as water should be privatized? What groups are likely to negatively impacted by privatization? When traditional markets fail to provide optimum solutions, is government intervention justified. Explain using the Ridley and Low reading as well as specific examples from the film to support your views. (7 points) What are some of the main themes highlighted in the film, “Flow, For Love of Water?” What were some of the examples of water privatization in both poor and wealthy countries. Include five-six issues from the film that you found particularly discussion-worthy. (8 points) Finally, (a) find out if the water source at your home is privatized or not. What company and when was the water privatized? (b) In the United States, research two other areas (not mentioned in the film) where water is at the center of conflict, whether quality or privatization. (c) Have there been any protests, social movements, or policies put in place to address part (b) (8 points)
