Video Recording of Police Officers Debate

INSTRUCTIONS:

It is no doubt, with the advancement of technology and the introduction of “convenient” recording devices, citizens have made it a point to freely record any incident they choose to. With the explosion of social media, these videos are seen by millions of individuals. The actions of police officers have been an area under much scrutiny, especially as a result of video recordings. In the article, “For Cops, Citizen Videos Bring Increased Scrutiny…,” Kevin Johnson writes, “The videos are so ubiquitous that analysts and police debate whether they are serving the public interest___ or undermining public trust in law enforcement and even putting officers’ lives in jeopardy.” Write an essay in which you either defend or oppose the posting of video recordings of police officers (by the public). This does not include recordings made by police officers themselves. This is a cause and effect essay, the cause being the actual posting of the videos and the effects being the consequences based on the side you are supporting. If you have Strategies for Successful Writing…, see chapter 6. Requirements: Your essay must: • Be MLA formatted: typed, 12” font, double spaced, Times New Roman, 1 inch margin, last name of author on upper right with page number (and all other MLA requirements). • Include citations from “For Cops, Citizens…” and at least two other sources. At least one of these must be from the CUNY Database. • At least one of your works cited page entry should be in annotated bibliography format. • Be 3-4 pages in length (not including works cited page). • Be presented (first draft) on date indicated on the syllabus. Hint: use events published in the newspapers and cases that are documented. Try to include statistics when possible; this prepares you for upcoming research. Remember, I have posted the 2 possible outlines on Blackboard. These are the outlines we did together in class. You may choose different effects; the outines are guides if you need them. This assignment prepares you with the skills you will need for your upcoming research paper.
