Abstract
This report analyzes the efforts
committed by the United States towards war on drugs and the efforts being
experienced now and the in the future. The United States' war on drug policies
which have cost the taxpayer at least $1trillion and led to the incarceration
of millions of people has proved futile. The U.S. should focus on legalizing
and regulating the drug market to reduce its expenditure on the unsuccessful
war. Permitting drugs for medical and recreational purposes will curb the
economic and social harm that the war has caused. The unsuccessful drug war
policies have not only affected the U.S. but also other countries such as

Introduction
June 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of
the United States’ journey of the ongoing war on drugs which has significantly
reshaped the nation’s economy, society, and politics. The biggest question has
been whether America is winning or losing the battle on drugs. The United
States has been at the forefront of fighting the global war on drugs for several
decades, but the war is yet to come to an end. It goes back to the 1970s when
President Richard Nixon officially initiated the war on drugs to combat and
eliminate the consumption of illegal drugs in the United States (Hollingshed,
2019). President Nixon told Congress in 1971 that the drug menace would destroy
American society if authorities failed to take proactive measures to eliminate
it. Nixon's successors, significantly President Reagan, enhanced the military
and global police war against illegal drugs. The strategies that different
administrations employed in the war on drugs led to several intended unintended
consequences have multiplied global violence and led to massive imprisonment of
perpetrators in the U.S. despite significantly reducing illegal drug
transactions in the U.S. A University of Pennsylvania study observes that the
U.S. government has spent at least one trillion dollars to fund the war on
drugs since its inception in 1971(Hollingshed, 2019). America's war on drugs
has its successes and failures as scholars have expressed divided opinions on
the matter, with some arguing that the U.S. has succeeded in several ways. At
the same time, conservatives and liberals observe that the war on illegal drugs
has yet to pay of

The primary goal of the war on drugs
in the U.S. is reducing or eliminating the acquisition and consumption of
illegal drugs in American society. America also wanted to inhibit and neutralize
the global illicit drug market by enacting strict policies that would make
access to drugs complex by making it scarcer and costlier, and unaffordable in
American society. Some data sources have revealed that drugs are becoming more
affordable in the U.S. However, drug policy experts argue that the war on drugs
has played a crucial role in curbing drug abuse by making it difficult for
individuals to access these substances (Pearl, 2018). The earlier years of the
war on drugs saw a significant decline in the use of illegal drugs in the U.S.,
giving authorities hope that they would soon make the U.S. a drug-free society.
Authorities were optimistic that they would eradicate the economic and social
ills linked to drugs and drug abuse in the U.S. However, the recent increase in
cases of illicit drugs in the U.S. paints a different picture about the war on
drugs.
