Vanya Play Analysis
Uncle
Vanya is a film with a strong family aspect and how people interact in broader
society. The character name Uncle Vanya is the brother to the deceased
wife of the professor and acts as the property estate manager. The twist at the
beginning of the play shows how Uncle Vanya falls for the current
professor's beautiful wife, Yelena.
On
the other hand, the professor is portrayed as being reserved; he shows no much
love for his immediate family, brother-in-law, the mother, and even his own
daughter. Hence, his decision to sell the estate did not consider their felling
or any attachment they might be having with the estate. At the pick of the
film, the professor indicates that Russia is very expensive for him; hence, he
wanted to move to Finland with his young wife, Yelena. The tension heightens to
the point of exchange of word and an attempt by Vanya to shoot his brother-in-law.
The film ends with Vanya complaining about the high cost of living and how they
needed to work harder to elevate themselves from poverty.
The
first theme of the play is hatred, which is first depicted by Vanya because he
did not receive the Professor's scholarship. The second theme is appearance and
reality. The professor is depicted as having a fraudulent clam for his
intelligence. Addressing the professor, Vanya indicated that “you write about
art, but you understand nothing of art!" This shows the difference between
the appearance of the professor versus the reality of the matter. The third
idea of the play is that choices and consequences go hand-in-hand. Maria
Vasilyevna is not happy about her son’s life progress; she feels that Vanya has
brough bad luck and stagnation to himself.
Most
of the themes depicted in the play do not resonate in any of my personalities.
For example, the idea of hatred has nothing to do with how I live. I try as
much as possible not to hate people. I like to be objective in everything I do
and tolerate people.
I learned that the human condition is a significant life aspect that all human beings should try as much as possible to endure instances of unhappiness. Many key...
