Uncle Vanya Play Analysis

Uncle Vanya is a film with a strong family aspect and how people interact in broader society. The character name Uncle Vanya is the brother to the deceased wife of the professor and acts as the property estate manager. The twist at the beginning of the play shows how Uncle Vanya falls for the current professor's beautiful wife, Yelena.

On the other hand, the professor is portrayed as being reserved; he shows no much love for his immediate family, brother-in-law, the mother, and even his own daughter. Hence, his decision to sell the estate did not consider their felling or any attachment they might be having with the estate. At the pick of the film, the professor indicates that Russia is very expensive for him; hence, he wanted to move to Finland with his young wife, Yelena. The tension heightens to the point of exchange of word and an attempt by Vanya to shoot his brother-in-law. The film ends with Vanya complaining about the high cost of living and how they needed to work harder to elevate themselves from poverty. 

The first theme of the play is hatred, which is first depicted by Vanya because he did not receive the Professor's scholarship. The second theme is appearance and reality. The professor is depicted as having a fraudulent clam for his intelligence. Addressing the professor, Vanya indicated that “you write about art, but you understand nothing of art!" This shows the difference between the appearance of the professor versus the reality of the matter. The third idea of the play is that choices and consequences go hand-in-hand. Maria Vasilyevna is not happy about her son’s life progress; she feels that Vanya has brough bad luck and stagnation to himself.

Most of the themes depicted in the play do not resonate in any of my personalities. For example, the idea of hatred has nothing to do with how I live. I try as much as possible not to hate people. I like to be objective in everything I do and tolerate people.
