Introduction
Leadership
entails the ability to influence the conduct of people to meet organizational
objectives. Management experts have established various leadership theories
that include transformational and transactional leadership. As leadership
styles, transactional leadership focuses on the transaction between a leader
and his/her subordinates; while transformational leadership emphasizes on the
establishment of change to the subordinates. As a notable transformational leader
John F Kennedy focused on inspiring a nation to alter its old ways and adopt a
new era of socio-political development. Even so, there are differences between
transactional and transformational leaders; and so, as evidenced by the
leadership style of President Kennedy transformational leadership is more
popular.
President Kennedy as a
transformational leader
JFK was a transformational leader because
he did not leave Americans to fight for their rights while he remained in the
White House; as such, he observed and acted on the needs of the country. For
example, President Kennedy spearheaded the calls for equality and appeared
before Congress to support the enactment of civil rights legislation. For
Maldonado (2011), in Civil Rights speech he questioned why all Americans were
not enjoying the same rights. JFK saw the instability segregation was causing
among the minority groups that faced inhumane racist treatment. Hence, the
consideration of American people underlines his transformational leadership
because he took an interest in his followers.
As a transformational leader President
Kennedy fought for change not only for Americans but also for international
community since he stimulated his followers intellectually by persuading them
to judge the world differently. For instance, in 1963 he urged the United
States together with the Soviet Union to work on establishing a nuclear ban
treaty hence it was clear he advocated for a progressive approach that focused
on solving international tension (Maldonado, 2011). Therefore, through his
speech and eloquence he managed to end the cold war; however, the Soviet Union
failure to trust the United States prevented them from signing the treaty.
