INSTRUCTIONS:
For this assignment must select four works of art from this new interactive website from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston containing over 7,000 items. Scroll down to see the images: https://artsandculture.google.com/partner/the-museum-of-fine-arts-houston?hl=en (Links to an external site.) The items are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts and can be organized by time, popularity, or color. Important: if using an online image, you must include the URL link to that image. Be sure the images you plan to use is from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The Four Roles of the Artist 1. Artists make a visual record of the people, places, and events of their time and place. 2. Artists help us (you!) to see the world in new or innovative ways. 3. Artists make functional objects and structures more pleasurable and elevate them or imbue them with meaning. 4. Artists give form to the immaterial—hidden or universal truths, spiritual forces, personal feelings. Write a minimum 700-word paper (two pages double-spaced 12 pt. Times Roman, Helvetica or similar) about the four roles of the artist you have learned about. Select a work/object that you feel strongly about for each of the four roles (you will be writing about a total of four different artworks). Take notes as you view each artwork to help you organize your thoughts and to serve as prompts when you write your paper. Stay on topic--you should not be writing about the history of the Renaissance or a biography of the artist! Stick to the four roles of the artist. Use your own words and the vocabulary of art you are learning in class. There should be no need to use footnotes or bibliography. Use your own eyes, not someone else's. This paper will be submitted using Turnitin, so don’t plagiarize. I am interested in reading your story! · Write about the four roles in the order they appear above. Do not use the same artwork more than once. · Make it clear in the first part of each paragraph what role of the artist you are writing about. For example: "The first role of the artist is to make a visual record of the people, places and events of their time and place. An artwork that demonstrates this role is..." · Identify each artwork by title, artist, date and medium. Use italics or quotation marks for titles of all artworks! · Using your own words, provide a general description of the artwork. What are we supposed to be looking at? Assume the reader has not seen it. · Using your own words, discuss the content of the work (what you think it means) and how the artwork fits in that particular category of role of the artist. Whenever possible, provide evidence you seen in the work to support your analysis. · Discuss why you feel strongly about the artwork—what is it about the work that attracted your attention. Make it personal! · Be sure to connect the artwork to the specific role of the artist when you discuss it in your paper. · Include an introductory paragraph that outlines the purpose of the paper and introduces the roles of the artist. Finish with a concluding paragraph that summarizes what you have written. Along with the four paragraphs covering the four roles of artists, you should have a total of six paragraphs in your paper. · As an aid for looking at and thinking about art, consider referring to the four steps of art criticism as a general guide. The four steps of art criticism can be found as a module in this course. However, you are not expected to be knowledgeable of the elements of art (description) and principles of design (analysis) since we have not yet covered them in the course. By following these guidelines, you will write a successful paper! For example: *You select a different artwork for each role of the artist. Role #1: Artwork A Role #2: Artwork B Role #3: Artwork C Role #4: Artwork D Total of four different artworks, each focused on one specific role. Rather than randomly selecting artworks, in order to achieve the best results you should select an artwork that you feel especially fits a particular role. So, you may need to spend a little time researching images from the link I sent you. Remember, the artwork needs to be from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston collection or from your textbook. You must include the URL MFAH website) or the image number (textbook) It will be indicated on every artwork. Do not select an artwork from the website or your book that is already discussed with regard to its purpose, function, role, etc.--you need to discuss that!
