The relationship between the indigenous people and the settler Canadians has never been based on equal individual rights; this is despite the national constitution recognizing the existence of these rights in 1982. Indeed, the process of revealing the darkest chapter of Canadian history is still in the initial stages. There was a lost generation in Canada where for more than 100 years, 100,000 indigenous children attended residential schools run majorly by churches. The primary goal of these schools was to civilize children from indigenous tribes such as the Metis, Inuit and First Nations by breaking the linkage to their identities and cultures (Cromb, 2017). Children were subjected to sexual and physical abuse resulting in thousands of deaths, even though the last school closing in the 1990s, the harm caused is still apparent today.
