What explains the pay gap between men and women?

The pay difference between men and women is enormous and cannot be ignored considering various efforts that have been employed to reconcile the difference without success. According to Corbett & Hill (2012), since 1963, when women’s participation in employment become noticeable, they have been earning considerably lower that the men. Given the low income, women are left with limited choices on their spending behaviors despite the fact that some work full time and end up getting less pay than the men.

The first aspect that explains the existence of remuneration gap between the males and females is the difference in the choices made by each one of them. In most cases, due to other household responsibilities, women may have to choose to work for lesser hours compared to men. The role revolving around most households are attended by women such as cooking and attending to the children that make them leave work early hence they do not get overtime benefits like men.
