The short story "Necklace” presents Mathilde Loisel, a "pretty and charming" woman who feels that the family she was born to into a family of low economic status. Mathilde was married to a clerk in the ministry of education, and he cannot provide the first-class experience of the comfortable life she thinks she deserves. Mathilde feels that she is getting overwhelmed by the shackles of poverty. She spends a lot of time imagining an extravagant lifestyle. Mathilde's reality and the situation is that she is not from a high social class she thinks she deserves and not any wealthier but leaves in illusions.

Mathilde is seemingly living in a world of fantasy; she is not rich and does not belong to a social class that she thinks she deserves. The life of Mathilde is like an illusion.
