Public opinion is important, not only to citizens but also to the
governance systems, in the development of policies and safeguarding the public
interest. A lack of positively stimulated public opinion leads to laxity among
the leaders and elite class. However, public opinion is highly dependent on
media and how news is handled. The news filled with propaganda is likely to
arouse a certain form of public opinion that is not necessarily good for the
country's development. Some highly influential media outlets such as social
media, televisions, and print media must be regulated to ensure truthful and
consensus-building information is distributed. Therefore, new distribution
impacts the formulation of public opinion by sensitizing a large population,
sparking emotion, and exposing the wrongdoing of the people in power. For the
purpose of this discussion, news regarding George Floyd will be used to create
a better understanding of the impacts of the distribution of current events on
the formulation of public opinion.
BBC published the selected event on 11th June 2020. George Floyd
was allegedly killed by a police officer through the pressure of the neck, a
situation that many people found disturbing and unbearable. Present in the
event was Ms. Frazier, who recorded the 44-year-old police officer, Derek
Chauvin, pressing his knee against the victim's neck. The event was shared
through social media, which created an easier way of distribution and access
across the world. The event took place in Minneapolis near Minnesota and turned
to be one of the highly debated events of black treatment by the white cops in
the United States (BBC, 2020). This event can help explain the impact of news
distribution on the formulation of public opinion of the masses.
First, distribution helps reach a large population, leading to a global movement to denounce wrongful events. The first common attribute of distribution through social media is that it will reach a large population, altering their opinion regarding different governance issues.
