The
Major Causes of Stress for Low Enforcement Personnel and the Impact the Stress
May Have On
The
Professional and Personal Life of Officers
Stress is a feeling of
emotional and physical tension. According to Carroll (2019), stress emanates from any event or
thought that makes an individual feel angry, nervous, and frustrated. There are
two types of stress disorders, including acute stress disorders (ASD) and
traumatic stress disorders (PSTD). Stress can affect individuals at any age
when they are exposed to traumatizing events. All job professions are prone to
stress, including the law enforcement department. Behavioral and chemotherapy
are prime strategies employed in addressing stress. Stress for law enforcement
officers originates from activities like working for many hours in a day, rigid
and inflexible organization nature, and marital and family-related problems. Stress
leads to reduced job efficiency, health complication and suicide, and
engagement in reckless behaviors by law enforcement personnel.
Major
causes of stress for law enforcement personnel
First, stress for law enforcement personnel
emanates from long working hours in a day. Law enforcement is a tasking
profession requiring police officers to maintain around-the-clock security and
law compliance (Christopher, 2018).
Hence, staffs are forced to work for not less than 10 hours in a day before
rest. Being on duty for so long makes their minds so exhausted to the extent of
stress build-up. executing for not less than 10hours mean police officers have no
ample time to rest because officers can be called any time when the need
arises. Also, Staffs in this profession have limited time to spend with their
families. In most cases, the number of police officers available in any country
is lower than the number demanded. Thus the department cushions the workforce
deficit by instituting overtime. Law enforcement officers are required to
execute their roles from Monday to Sunday regardless of whether it is a holiday
or not. Employees in the law enforcement department enjoy fewer leaves and off
days per year compared to other professions. Some officers take considerable
time before reuniting with their family members due to job ties. They rarely
get to know how their loved ones are faring, leading to home seek and stress.
Besides, law enforcement officers work in isolation rather than as a team
leaving no room to share their life experiences with their colleagues. Police officers go through tough times that
they need to share with their workmates, but they lack opportunities since they
work independently. Due to a lack of chances to consult on professional and
personal issues, stress adversely impacting their lives. Working many hours in
a day without arrests stress builds among law enforcement personnel because
they have minimal chances of interacting with their family member and
consulting their workmates on pressing issues.
Second, the nature of the organization of the law enforcement process is another fertile source of stress among personnel serving the department. Generally, the law enforcement department operates on hierarchical and bureaucratic leadership styles. According to Harris et al. (2017), a one-way communication model dominates the law enforcement department. The topmost leader gives instructions, which are implemented by the operational team. Officers feel stressed when the bureaucratic leadership style is in play because they do not directly access their leader. They have to pass their complaints and compliments through the specified communication channel and wait for the response via the same protocol. On a similar note, rigid and inflexible management styles perpetuate stress on law enforcement professionals. An inflexible management style requires the police officers to implement the information in the given format. Their opinion regarding the effectiveness of the law in the play does not count. Theirs is to follow orders. Some rules are more effective when discussed between the leader and enforcement officers. However, in some instances, such opportunities are unavailable, resulting in the stressful manner of implementing the orders. Law informant officers are stressed by...
