Question: Why is Frank Gehry’s Nederlanden Building in Prague
(Figure 15-8) considered an “extraordinary interaction between the arts”? What
art form does the work of architecture interpret? Which elements does it
appropriate? Explain.
Frank Gehry
finished construction on the Nederlanden building in Prague, Czech Republic, in
1996. It's also referred to as The Dancing House. It's also known as "the
dancing house." Yet, every commentator on the construction has emphasized
its patterns, notably the windows on the numerous stairs along the outside
(Jacobus & Martin, 2018, p. 392).The Fred and Ginger House was constructed
on an empty riverside property. Vlado Milunic, an architect, also contributed
to the design. It's a "wonderful relationship between the arts"
because Gehry was motivated by "junk art," which probes raw building
supplies and examines the notion of attractiveness. He was also influenced by
the collage technique used by Cubist painters, which he employed in practically
all of his buildings by building, restoring, and draping.
The
Dancing House
Due to the odd form, the architecture is recognized as deconstructivist. The structure is nicknamed after a dance duo called Fred and Ginger. The dancing pattern is reinforced by 99 concrete blocks, each unique in size and shape. On the top of the building's roofing lies a massive, twisted metal frame known as Mary.
