INSTRUCTIONS:
World War II many times has been labeled “The Good War.” As Americans we have a collective sense that it was marked by high levels of social cohesiveness and sacrifice on the home front, and great amounts of bravery, courage and unity by American soldiers. In addition, amazing American technology and immense levels of industrial production helped win the war. In short, Americans fought an honorable and good fight and saved the world. This version of history, although containing much truth, also leaves much out. In other words, in order to portray the war in a positive light, events and issues have been ignored or downplayed that provide a more negative view of the war. Write an essay that focuses on these negative aspects and the hardships Americans suffered through this war. Your focus will be on the following social groups: Japanese Americans, African Americans, soldiers, and women.
