The Development of the Gender Ideology

INSTRUCTIONS:

From Rosie to Lucy seeks to provide a historical context for the development of the gender ideology that exists today in American society. Our experience viewing Jean Kilbourne’s TED talk and marketing advertisements also helps frame our understanding of what it means to be a man or a woman, and further demonstrates our social norms. Gender roles are rooted in a society’s belief system and American culture—from the early 20th century until the present day—has specific views on how men and women should ideally behave regardless of how you feel.  The understanding and implication of each gender (from what tradition dictates to what modernity advocates…) is carefully constructed. This ideology permeates several disciplines, proving that knowledge is reinforced through both direct and indirect language and/or behavior, which [KBCC1] [A2] causes an internalized (and perhaps subconscious) gender hierarchy.     Task You are composing an essay based on the chapter “From Rosie to Lucy” of Davidson and Lytle’s “After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection, Volume 11.” You are pairing the aforementioned text with knowledge you’ve gained from Kilbourne’s TED talk “The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women”, and with your choice of four advertisements—one vintage set and one modern set—that are each comprised of one advertisement that targets a man and one advertisement that targets a woman.   You are using the chapter, the TED talk, and the four ads to create a logically developed essay with a thesis that discusses any changes, advancements, problems, or issues in the way gender was constructed decades ago with the way gender is constructed presently.  You will draw on information from all six works to present an informed argument.    Essay Criteria This essay should: -       explore the same issue from different disciplines and therefore perspectives. -       demonstrate a thorough understanding of gender ideology via societal expectations. -       analyze your 4 chosen advertisements regarding: visuals, phraseology, implications. -       challenge particular insightful questions that arise as you engage with the material.    Format 4—5 pgs min., black 12 pt font, clear font style, double spaced, 1 inch margins, MLA style heading, page #s, creative title, clear thesis. Quotations from/references to all works.  Include in-text citations where necessary and a WC page.  [KBCC1]  [A2]
