2. Who is Horatio Alger?

SOLUTION:

What reasons does Krugman give for the creation of a caste society in the United States?

Paul Krugman credits the development of a caste society in the United States to the level of inequality in the society, whereby despite the efforts of the poor and the marginalized they tend to remain poor. As such, the poverty cycle ends up being inherited from fathers by sons who propagate the same down to other generations. The author argues that the United States society is characterized by the declining social mobility, for that reason this results in the increase of wealth inequality, leading to America becoming a class-laden society. The situation is worsened by the political class, who have failed to act as such they have ended up strengthening class inequality in the society. Besides, the distribution of income is highly unequal; and so, this enlarges the gap that exists between the rich and the poor, thus promoting the possibility of societal evils complemented by economic inequality.
