INSTRUCTIONS:
One of the main jobs of historians is to interpret the past by reviewing primary documents, scholarly secondary sources, and then creating an analysis of this research. After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, address the following questions in your discussion posts: Why did the United States elect to use atomic bombs against Japan? Are there any other options that Harry Truman should have pursued? Why or why not? Was the United States justified in dropping the bombs on Japan? Why or why not? This assignment requires you to post an original post of at least 300 words. You must then respond to at least two of your classmates' posts, and these responses must be at least 125 words each. For full credit, your posts must be substantive, constructive, and respectful. Do not simply sum up the reading or repeat points made there, and do not simply agree or disagree with your classmates. Be specific, and provide examples that help support your analysis. Make use of the evidence to engage one another in enriching discussions. I am looking for you to create your own interpretations and to discuss original insights. Include Turabian-style citations as needed. Failure to submit posts by the deadline will result in a zero for the assignment. Resources: The Atomic Bomb Along with your textbook, use these resources to prepare for your writing assignment: Statement by the President Announcing the Use of the A-Bomb at Hiroshima Why Did We Drop the Bomb? Did We Need to Drop It? Truman Did Not Understand If the Atomic Bomb Had Not Been Used Was it Wrong to Drop the Atom Bomb on Japan?
