The book, The Souls of Black Folk: The Forethought, Chapter 1; Of Our Spiritual Strivings, written by Du Bois focuses on instances of racial nuance that befall the writer in the consequence chapters. Specifically, the chapter is based on key premises such as rejection of the basis of color. First, the author recounts his experience in New England at schoolhouse when his peers openly rejected him. "The exchange was merry, till one girl, a tall newcomer, refused my card,—refused it peremptorily, with a glance" (Du Bois 2).
