Standards
of Classroom Behavior
A
classroom is like a society since it comprises students and teachers from
various backgrounds. Hence, behaviors such as being safe, responsible and
respectful are paramount in establishing order and routine in the classroom.
Safety behaviors ensure students and teachers are free from hurt in the
classroom. Washing hands after visiting washrooms prevents the spread of
contentious diseases (Sengkey et al., 2019). Also, keeping piercing objects
like nails and broken glasses away from reach maintains physical safety in
classrooms. Apart from physical safety, emotional safety is crucial in a
learning setting. Listening attentively to learners builds their emotional
safety and confidence to share their feelings openly with their teachers (Tyler
et al., 2018). Being responsible also counts in creating a conducive
environment. Reading and completing assignments on time and taking notes as
teachers explain concept shows students responsible (Aydın & Ok, 2022). It
is students’ responsibility to develop goals on which to focus. Lastly,
respectful behaviors contribute immensely to the development of a conducive
classroom. Post et al. (2020) argue that respectful students use kind words and
avoid offensive language when talking to one another. Respect promotes healthy
discussion in class. Respectful, learners listen to their opponents with
deferring views and, where possible, accommodate them without conflict in a
debate and discussion.
