Soft Skill for Physical Therapists

Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy, is an important part of human health that is not only recommended when one has chronic pain but even when boosting one's stamina. A doctor in physiotherapy plays the role of applying evidence-based kinesiology to clients, particularly those experiencing pains resulting from accident, trauma, or any other attributing factors. To become a doctor in physical therapy (DPT), one needs to attain a particular education threshold and meet regulations set by the individual States before licensing. However, other than technical and medical skills, doctors pursuing a physical therapy program need to have soft skills such as communication and listening, resilience, and be sociable.

First, communication is an important skill that enables doctors in physiotherapy to interact with clients. Communication entails the ability to demonstrate how a patient should conduct themselves and providing easily understandable recommendations. The role of communication between a patient/client and a therapist is to ensure information is shared effectively. For example, during a session, a therapist should ensure that guidelines are clear to a client to avoid extra harm. Since communication between therapists and clients is two way, the listening skill also comes in handy. When a client shares information, a therapist should be keen on receiving, decoding, interpreting the information, and taking appropriate actions. Clients like therapists who are excellent communicators and listeners because they are free to share their problems.
