During the first month of class, we have read a number of examples of the three major theoretical perspectives on deviance, crime, and social control: functionalism; conflict theory; and symbolic interactionism. The film we are watching today, Crips and Bloods: Made in America, portrays a community defined as deviant. In putting forth an explanation of the gang members’ deviant behavior, the film implicitly uses the three perspectives in its analysis. In a typed, double-spaced paper 4-5 pages in length, please explain the way in which each of the three theoretical perspectives can be used to analyze the situation portrayed in the documentary. That is, how would functionalist theory explain the gang violence and/or urban uprisings in South Central L.A.? How would conflict theory explain it?
