INSTRUCTIONS:
Part I In your own words, paraphrase, summarize, explain, or describe at least three (3) main terms and concepts related to social institutions and social change including: Family, Education, Religion, Government, and Economy. Identify the main types of families in U.S. Society, the branches of government, world religions, and functions of the economy, for example. Choose at least three (3) main terms from the textbook or lecture, but you do not need to address all the terms (Lecture PowerPoint, Social Institutions and Social Change; Giddens (2018) Ch. 13-17 & 20; Hunt & Colander (2014) Ch. 8 &12; Staggenborg (2015) Ch. 4-6.) Part II State your own perspective (viewpoint, standpoint, or position) regarding social institutions and social change. Critically examine diverse, different, or changing, gender roles for men and women in today’s society--meaning at home, work, school, and so forth. Articulate women’s experiences, compared to men’s experiences, and evaluate the issue of egalitarianism (equality and equal treatment) in today's family and today's society. For stimulus, consider the following: 1. Based on your informed opinion, knowledge, and experience, identify one or more social institution(s) that you think will have the greatest impact on social change in the near future. Briefly explain the changes that you expect to happen in the future. 2. For example, will the nuclear family remain the main type of family, or will other types of families replace the nuclear family? Relatively, will single lifestyle, cohabitation, marriage, and divorce rates increase, decrease, or remain the same? Will people with different sexual orientation and/or gender identity (LGBTQ) be recognized as "equal" members of society, like other groups that historically have been treated differentially based on their identity including women, Blacks, and Jews, for example? 3. Should we expect that religion will overly influence politics, overturn Roe v. Wade (1973), and take away women’s' right to have an abortion? Is abortion rights merely a Christian, Democrat or Republican issue? 4. Might the extremely high costs of health care and education remain leading causes of debt for American citizens, affecting the U.S. economy? Or, do you think universal health care and free tuition will ever become reality? For additional clarification, choose three (3) main terms and concepts from those stated above, but you do not need to address all the concepts. One long or two short paragraphs would be sufficient to answer the question. The content, and the length, will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vStLGBTKMBQ
