Effect
of Deforestation on Ecology
Trees
are the primary factors in maintaining a robust ecological balance. However,
human activities like agriculture, settlement, and industrialization have
encouraged the cutting down trees. Deforestation is not cost-free, but it
results in ecological challenges, including disruption of the carbon cycle,
hydraulic disruption cycle (water), and reduction in species diversity.
First,
deforestation leads to disruption of the carbon cycle. When forests are cleared
and burnt, the carbon stored in trees is released into the atmosphere. Trees
use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis and release oxygen gas into the atmosphere
(Mitchard, 2018). Therefore, deforestation will promote the accumulation of
carbon dioxide in the air since the tree will not be there to absorb and use
the carbon dioxide exhaled by a living organism in the ecosystem.
Also, deforestation contributes to the disruption of hydraulic cycles. Trees...
