Identity formation or development is a complex process
involving how humans develop a unique perception of their identity. Personality
development, values, and personality development are closely associated with
identity development. Although identity formation is a lifelong process, it is
more salient during adolescence. According to Erikson, the increase in salience
is mostly influenced by cognitive development, physical transformations during
puberty, and societal expectations and opportunities (Syed & Fish, 2018).
