Capital Theory by Dreiling (2015) discusses three concepts of social
capital: resources, topology (structure of network), and the nature of the
relationship between an individual and others in the network. A resource is
someone or something that helps an individual accomplish a given task. For example,
reaching a friend or family member to ask about a business idea one is sure of
is a resource in social capital. Topology encompasses the kind of people individuals
socialize with and the size of relationship network they have with one another.
The type and size of the network determine the type and quality of resources an
individual can potentially access. The relationship between an individual and
their resources determines how possible or impossible an individual can exploit
resources embedded in the relationship they are members of. It involves trust,
mistrust, resects and disrespect, feeling, expectations, and obligations.
My social capital encompasses my friend and relatives who contribute positively to my life.
